이 논문은 장동익 교수가 “피터 싱어의 동물해방론을 비판함: 종차별주의 옹호”에서 펼친 싱어 비판을 따라가며, 그 비판의 문제점을 조목조목 지적하려고 한다. 먼저 2절에서는 그가 사용하는 ‘종 평등주의’와 ‘종 차별주의 옹호’라는 용어가 생경하며 엄밀하지 못하다고 지적한다. 장 교수가 싱어를 비판하는 가장 주된 이유는 싱어가 도덕적 지위를 부여하는 속성이 무엇인지를 밝힌 다음에 그 속성을 동물도 가졌다고 증명하는 것이 아니라, 거꾸로 인간과 동물 사이의 유사점을 찾아내고 이것이 도덕적 지위를 부여하는 속성이라고 주장한다는 것이다. 3절에서는 이 비판이 싱어를 오해하고 있음을 밝힌다. 4절에서는 장 교수가 가장자리 인간 논증에 제대로 대응하지 못하고 있다고 주장한다. 5절에서는 인간이 동물보다 도덕적으로 우월하다는 장 교수의 주장이 근거가 부족하다고 비판한다. 마지막으로 6절에서는 채식주의가 위선이라고 주장하는 장 교수의 비판도 오해에서 비롯되었음을 보여 준다.
This paper follows Professor Chang Dongik’s critique of Singer in “Critiquing Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation: An Advocating Speciesism” and tries to point out the problems with his critique. In section 2, we points out that his use of the terms “species egalitarianism” and “speciesism advocacy” are unfamiliar and imprecise. Chang’s main criticism of Singer is that instead of identifying the properties that confer moral status and then proving that animals have them, Singer works backwards, finding similarities between humans and animals and claiming that these are the properties that confer moral status. Section 3 shows that this criticism misunderstands Singer. Section 4 argues that Chang fails to adequately respond to the marginal human argument. Section 5 criticizes Chang’s claim that humans are morally superior to animals as lacking in evidence. Finally, section 6 shows that Chang’s criticism of vegetarianism as hypocrisy also stems from a misunderstanding.
