본 연구는 1980년 동국산악회 마나슬루 등반대의 마나슬루 등정 성과를 살펴보고 체육사적 의미를 살펴보고자 하였다. 첫째, 동국산악회의 세계 8위봉 마나슬루 등정은 1977년 고상돈의 에베레스트 등정 이후 한국의 두 번째 8000미터 급 봉우리의 등정으로 이후 한국등반대의 8000미터 14개 봉우리의 도전을 위한 디딤돌이었다. 둘째, 단일산악회로 구성된 한국 최초 고산등반의 성공은 단일 등반대의 팀워크와 지휘체계에 대한 중요성이 강조되며 개별 산악회의 고산 등반 활성화에 초석이 되었다. 셋째, 군사 정변으로 어수선한 사회 분위기 속에서 등반대의 성공은 산악계와 체육계를 넘어 사회 전반에 도전정신과 희망의 메시지를 전파하였다. 넷째, 등반대의 성공은 등반대장 이인정이 산악계와 체육계에서의 주요 인물로 성장하는데 큰 기반이 되었으며, 이는 산악 분야가 국내에서 스포츠 분야로 정착되고, 세계무대에서 한국 산악계의 위상을 증대시키는데 밑바탕이 되었다. 마지막으로 마나슬루의 등정은 산악 그랜드슬램 달성을 통해 한국 산악계를 세계에 널리 알린 박영석 대장의 산악계 입문과 성장에 직접적인 영향을 미쳤음을 확인할 수 있었다.
This study aims to examine the performance of Dong-guk Mountaineering Team's ascent of Manaslu in 1980 and its sporting significance. First, the Dong-guk Mountaineering Team's ascent of Manaslu, the world's eighth highest peak, was Korea's second ascent of an 8000-metre peak after Ko Sang-don's ascent of Everest in 1977, and served as a stepping stone for the subsequent ascent of fourteen 8000-metre peaks by Korean climbers. Second, the success of Korea's first alpine expedition comprising a single mountaineering team highlighted the importance of teamwork and command, and laid the foundation for the revitalization of alpine climbing by individual mountaineering clubs. Third, the success of the climbing team in the midst of military turmoil has spread a message of challenge and hope to the entire society beyond the mountaineering and sports communities. Fourth, the success of the team paved the way for the growth of the team's leader, Lee In-jung, into a major figure in the mountaineering and sports worlds, establishing mountaineering as a sport in Korea and raising the profile of Korean mountaineering on the world stage. Finally, the ascent of Manaslu had a direct impact on the entry and growth of Captain Park Young-seok, who put Korean mountaineering on the world stage by achieving the mountain grand slam.
