Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to systematically review the mindfulness-based psychosocial intervention for military personnel with PTSD to identify strategies, contents, and formats essential for effective intervention. Methods: A systematic search using keywords in English and Korean was conducted using ten databases, including MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL). Of 564 publications identified, 17 studies were finally included in this systematic review. Quality of evidence was assessed using the Scottish intercollegiate guidelines network (SIGN). Results: Body scan, meditation, mantra repetition, and yoga were identified as mindfulness-based interventions showing significant improvement in PTSD, depression symptoms and mindfulness, and quality of life. A lack of strict methodological analysis as well as no published domestic studies considering the situation on the Korean Peninsula were the limitation of the reviewed studies. Conclusion: Mindfulness-based intervention can be an effective way to improve PTSD symptoms and mental health of military personnels suffered from PTSD. Those findings will serve as a foundation for the development of mindfulness-based programs in the Korean military.
