밀(J. S. Mill)은 『여성의 종속』을 비롯한 여러 저술과 서한에서 여성의 지적/정신적/정치적 역량에 대한 유구한 편견에 맞서 여성의 자유와 권리의 신장이 인간 사회의 향상과 최대 행복의 실현에 불가결함을 역설했다. 그러나 『여성의 종속』에서의 그의 발언들에 대해서는 (1) 그것들의 내적 정합성과 (2) 그것들의 내용적 한계에 대한 비판들이 있었다. 이 논문에서 나는 이 비판들의 요점과 그 근거가 되는 문헌상의 지점들을 살펴보고, 특히 두 번째 비판과 관련하여 밀의 여성주의 대한 급진적 해석의 가능성을 비판적으로 검토할 것이다. 여기서 나는 이러한 해석의 가능성이 밀의 공리주의적 사유와 깊이 연관되어 있음에 주목할 것이다. 고찰을 종합하면서, 공리주의적 사유는 언제나 이상과 현실이라는 이중적 맥락, 말하자면 원리적 대의를 천명하는 맥락과 이 대의를 실현하기 위한 실용적 전략을 선택하는 맥락에서 동시에 작동하기에, 이러한 사유에 바탕을 둔 그의 여성주의도 마찬가지로 이중적 맥락에서 이해되어야 한다는 소견을 제시할 것이다. 마지막으로 특수한 정치적 목적을 가진 저술로서 『여성의 종속』은 이러한 공리주의적 사유의 이중적 작용을 구현한다는 점을 강조할 것이다.
In The Subjection of Women and other writings and letters, J. S. Mill challenged age-old prejudices against women’s intellectual, mental, and political capacities, and argued that the advancement of women’s freedom and rights was essential to the improvement of human society and the realization of the greatest happiness. However, his statements in The Subjection of Women have been criticized for (1) their internal coherence and (2) their content limitations. In this paper, I will briefly review the main points of these criticisms and the points in the literature on which they are based, and critically examine the possibility of a radical interpretation of Mill’s feminism, especially in relation to the second criticism. I will note that the possibility of such an interpretation is deeply relied on Mill’s utilitarian way of thinking. Concluding the discussion, I will argue that since utilitarian way of thinking always operates simultaneously in the dual contexts of the ideal and the real, that is, in the context of articulating a principled cause and in the context of choosing a pragmatic strategy for realizing that cause, Mill’s feminism, which is grounded in this way of thinking, must likewise be understood in a dual context. Lastly, I will emphasize that, as a writing with a specific political purpose, The Subjection of Women embodies this dual operation of utilitarian way of thinking.
