Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effects of performance-based treadmill training on balance and walking functions in patients with post-stroke hemiparesis. Twenty-one subjects recruited from two hospitals participated in this study. The subjects were allocated to either the experimental group (EG; n1 = 11) or the control group (CG; n2 = 10) based on locational convenience. The subjects in the EG performed performance-based treadmill training with adjustment of the walking speed depending on the subject’s performance, whereas those in the CG underwent treadmill training at a self-selected speed. Interventions were conducted for 30 minutes each session, twice per day, 5 days for 2 weeks (a total of 20 sessions). The outcome measures included the 10-m walk test (10MWT), 6-min walk test (6MWT), Berg balance scale (BBS), and activity-specific balance confidence scale (ABC). The measurements were taken at pre-test, post-test, and at 3-month follow-up. In the between-group comparison, after the intervention, the EG showed significantly greater improvements in the 10MWT and 6MWT values than did the CG, and gains were maintained at the 3-month follow-up (p
