Abstract
BACKGROUNDEpidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR)-tyrosine kinase(TK) is a transmembrane receptor TK which is overexpressed or abnormally activated in the many solid tumors. Recently, EGFR-TK inhibitors have been used commonly for non-small cell lung cancer. And according to some literatures, a modest number of patients who have both malignancies and type 2 diabetes were successfully treated not only for their malignancies but also for diabetes after administration of EGFR-TKIs. However, those were only case reports of some patients. We investigated, herein, retrospectively, serum glucose levels before and after gefitinib treatment. Moreover, other biochemical markers, such as total bilirubin, ureanitrogen(BUN) and creatinine(Cr), total cholesterol, were also investigated. We also analyzed relationship of these biochemical markers and progression-free survival(PFS).METHODSWe retrospectively checked levels of biochemical markers before and two months after administration of gefitinib of whom were diagnosed with non-small lung cancer and treated with gefitinib.RESULTSWe divided the patients as responder group and non-responder group. Unlike non-responder group, we found statistically significant differences in total cholesterol, BUN, Cr, postprandial 2hr serum glucose in responder goup. Total cholesterol and postprandial 2hr serum glucose were decreased statistically significantly. In contrast, BUN and Cr level were slightly increased at 2months after treatment of gefitinib. However, there was no statically significant relationship between progression-free survival and differences of total cholesterol, postprandial 2hr serum glucose and absolute level and its absolute values. CONCLUSIONSAfter treatment with gefitinib, postprandial 2hr serum glucose and total cholesterol were decreased , but BUN and Cr leverl were increased slightly. However, there was no statically significant relationship between progression-free survival and differences of analyzed biochemical markers.
