부산은 일제강점기와 한국전쟁 등으로 우리나라의 그 어떤 도시보다 아픈 역사를 품으며 성장한 도시이다. 특히 한국전쟁 때에는 많은 피난민들의 거주지로서 임시수도라는 큰 역할을 맡으며 혼란한 사회 속에서도 예술인들이 목표를 가지고 활약할 수 있는 사회적 분위기였다. 그럼으로써 피난민들의 예술 활동은 부산무용계 발전의 새로운 발돋움이 될 수 있었고 더 나아가 부산만의 무용계를 새롭게 구축하는 계기가 되어 이후 1970~80년대 무용계에 큰 변화를 증폭하는 단초를 마련하였다. 지역학의 중요성과 역할이 증대되는 오늘날, 각 지역의 예술사적 연구는 사회·문화적으로 매우 소중하기 때문에 지속적인 연구의 필요성이 제기된다. 결과적으로 1970~80년대 부산무용계의 변화 중 하나로써 사교육과 공교육의 정착화는 부산무용계의 기반을 견고히 구축하여 신인 무용예술가들을 출현하게 했다. 이는 근대화와 함께 부산 개항 이후 예전에 없던 현상으로 부산무용계의 새로운 발전을 가져온 계기가 되었다. 그러므로 이 연구에서는 한국춤의 근대화가 열리며 춤 활성화가 기반이 되었던 1970~80년대를 중심으로 부산무용의 시대적 양상과 특성을 실증적으로 규명하는 것을 목적으로 했다. 뿐만아니라 이 연구의 필요성과 함께 1970~80년대 부산무용의 역사적 가치와 의의를 재조명하고자 한다. 연구방법은 실증적 방법을 중심으로 역사 비평적 입장에 서되 내적 비평에 치중하였다. 아울러 문헌 연구를 중심으로 하되 면담 조사를 통해서 연구자료를 보충하였다. 문헌 연구의 경우 무용사와 관련된 자료를 포함하여 선행 연구자료와 부산지역 신문자료, 간행물, 공연 팜플렛 등 당시 그 시대와 관련된 부산지역의 자료들을 참고하였다. 면담 조사는 1970~80년대 활동한 원로 무용가들의 면담을 자료로 활용하였다. 1970~80년대 부산지역 무용활동 양상들을 통해 당시 부산무용계에 나타난 특성들을 살펴 정리해보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 부산무용계의 구심점은 활성화 된 사설 교육의 현장에서 대학교의 전문 교육기관으로 전환되었다는 점이다. 우선, 1970년대에는 사설 무용연구소를 통해 예술교육의 활성화를 이루었고 마침내 1980년대는 부산지역 대학 내 무용학과로써 독립학과로 신설되어 대거 발전되었다. 이후 대학교의 활동은 전문 동인 단체 활동으로 이어져 교육뿐만 아니라 무용계 예술활동의 구심점이 대학으로 이동되었다. 전문적인 춤의 사교육 확대는 부산지역이 배출한 한국의 대표 무용가로서 혹은 부산지역에서 활동하는 신진무용가들로 대거 출현 될 수 있는 원동력을 제공하면서 세대의 확장을 이루었다. 둘째, 무대예술의 활성화가 이루어졌다. 일반 상영극장과 강당 등 전문시설이 갖춰지지 않은 채 공연되었던 이전과는 달리 1973년 부산시민회관이 개관되면서 무용 작품이 종합무대예술로 전문화되어 구성되기 시작하였다. 특히 부산에서는 1973년 부산시립무용단이 국내 시립단체 중 최초로 창단되어 지역을 대표하는 단체로서 매년 다양한 공연을 통해 무대예술 활성화에 이바지하였다. 그리고 1980년대 소극장의 개관은 다양한 공간을 통해 부산지역 무용가들이 함께 창작 작품활동을 펼치면서 무대예술이 더욱 활기를 띠었다. 셋째, 장르의 구분이 확실해지면서 1980년대 현대무용의 성장이 독보적이었다. 대학 동인 단체의 현대무용단을 중심으로 전국적으로 활동 영역을 넓혔던 현대무용은 부산무용계에서 결속력을 다지며 새로운 입지를 다졌다. 이상의 특성을 통해 1970~80년대 부산무용계는 짧은 시간임에도 불구하고 다각적이며 급변하는 변화가 일어나기 시작한 시기였음을 알 수 있었다. 한국전쟁이란 근대 역사 속에서 부산지역은 새로운 무용계를 구축하여 1970~80년대의 대 변화를 맞이할 수 있었다. 이로써 1970~80년대에 부산무용계가 견고해지고 오늘날까지 발전해 올 수 있었던 원동력을 이끌어 준 시기라는 점에서 매우 의미 있고 가치가 있다. 결론적으로 1970~80년대의 부산무용계는 이후 부산무용계의 꽃봉오리가 피어날 중핵이 될 수 있었던 중요한 시기라 볼 수 있다.
Busan is the city that developed with more painful history than any other cities in Korea through Japanese Colonial Era and the Korean War. In particular, it played a big role of an interim capital as the dwelling for many refugees in Korean War, and created the social atmosphere where artists can work actively with a goal despite the chaos in the society. Therefore, refugees’ artistic activities became the new step up towards the development of the dance world in Busan, and furthermore became the opportunity to newly establish the dance world in the gulf of Busan, providing the motive to intensify huge changes in the dance world in the 1970~80s. In the present time when the importance and role of regional studies is increasing, the art history research in each region is very valuable, and the necessity of its continuous research is raised. Consequently, settlement of private education and public education, as one of changes in Busan dance world in the 1970~80s, firmly established the foundation of Busan dance world, and allowed new dance artists to emerge. This, along with modernization, was a phenomenon that was never seen before since the opening of Busan Port, and became the opportunity of new development in Busan dance world. Therefore, this study aimed to establish the aspects and characteristics of Busan dance in the 1970~80s, when it was the foundation of vitalization of dance with the modernization of Korean dance, empirically. In addition, it aims to re-examine the historical value and significance of Busan dance in 1970~80s. Study method concentrated on internal criticism, while on historical critical position, based on empirical method. In addition, while focusing on literature review, research data was supplemented through interviews. Literature review included data related to the history of dance, previous research data, as well as materials in Busan from that relevant era, including newspaper, publication, and performance pamphlets. Interviews were conducted on elder dancers that were active during 1970~80s.Characteristics seen in Busan dance world at that time based on aspects of dance activities in Busan area in the 1970~80s are as follows. First, the pivot of Busan dance world shifted from active private education to professional educational institutions in universities. At first, art education became active through private dance research institutes in 1970s, and in 1980s, independent departments were newly established in the universities in Busan area for greater development. After, activities in the universities led to professional group activities, shifting the pivot of artistic activities in the dance world to universities. Expansion of private education for professional dance achieved extension of generations by providing the driving force to produce many Korea’s top dancers from Busan or new dancers working in Busan area. Second, vitalization of performing arts occurred. Whereas performances were put on at general movie theaters or auditoriums without professional facilities in the past, dance works were specialized into composite stage art with the opening of Busan Citizens’ Hall in 1973. Especially in Busan, Busan Municipal Dance Company was founded in 1973 as the first municipal groups in the country, and contributed to the vitalization of performing arts through various performances every year as an organization that represents the region. Also, the opening of small theaters in 1980s provided dancers in Busan area to participate in creative activities through various spaces, vitalizing the performing arts more. Third, with clear classification of genre, the growth of modern dance in the 1980s was unequaled. Modern dance, which expanded its field nationwide, based on university modern dance groups solidified the unity in Busan dance world and established its new position. Based on above results, the Busan dance world in 1970~80s was when rapid, diversified changes began to take place despite the short time period. In the midst of modern history called Korean Warn, Busan established a new dance world to face great changes in 1970~80s. This period is very meaningful and valuable that it was the driving force for Busan dance world to become solid and develop until today. In conclusion, the Busan dance world in 1970~80s was a significant period that allowed the Busan dance world to bloom in the future.
