Abstract
This study examined moderating effect of failure tolerance and self-control on the relation between perfectionism and academic burnout and engagement. A sample of 431 high school students in U city completed self-report measures of perfectionism, academic burnout, academic engagement, failure tolerance and self-control. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, the self-oriented perfectionism and academic engagement showed significantly positive correlation and socially prescribed perfectionism and academic burnout showed significantly negative correlation. Secondly, socially prescribed perfectionism and failure tolerance had main effects on academic burnout. As a result of analysis by the hierarchical regression analysis, the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and academic burnout showed a moderating effect of by failure tolerance. Finally, self-oriented perfectionism and self-control had main effects on academic engagement. As a result of analysis by the hierarchical regression analysis, the relationship between self-oriented perfectionism and academic engagement showed a moderating effect of by self-control. This study revealed that socially prescribed perfectionism was failure tolerance has a moderating effect on academic burnout and self-oriented perfectionism was self-control has a moderating effect on academic engagement. Based on these results, consultation sessions for clients representing socially prescribed perfectionism even higher academic burnout through failure tolerance were able to know that you can reduce the academic burnout and self-oriented perfectionism even lower academic engagement through self-control were able to know that you can increase the academic engagement. The significance and limitation of this study and suggestion for follow-up studies were suggested based on the results.
