Abstract
The purpose of this study is to provide several suggestions for the construction of listening materials for the future refusal speech act education, by analyzing some aspects of refusal speech acts appearing in listening materials of Korean textbooks by horizontal relationship, social status and inducting speech acts and examining refusal strategies by each variable. The refusal speech act, a speech act refusing others' demands, may humiliate others. People, therefore, use many strategies to protect others' dignity, in refusing their demands. Among such strategies, Koreans prefer indirect refusal expressions, such as giving reasons or alternatives and apologizing, and their preferred strategies vary depending on relations with others. Learners who are not well aware of such characteristics may act impolitely or result in misunderstanding. It is thus necessary to educate speech acts for enhancing learners' communication skills, and listening materials which can provide substantial discourse data to learners are also very important. This study, therefore, selected listening materials of Korean textbooks as its targets and attempted to contribute to constructing listening materials for the future refusal speech act education, by analyzing the aspects of refusal speech acts and refusal strategies appearing in listening materials.Chapter 2 examined the characteristics and refusal speech acts and refusal strategies, after investigating the concept of speech acts as well as the need for speech act education. Although there were differences in the criteria of refusal strategies among many researchers, refusal strategies were largely divided into direct and indirect refusal expressions and additional ones, and it separately created an analysis frame to be applied to this study, by referring to Beebe et al.(1990), Lyuh(1992). Seo Huijeong (2001), Lee Haeyeong(2003) and Choi Yeonseon(2013). Chapter 3 proposed the analysis frame to be applied to this study by referring to a previous study and attempted to conduct an analysis by setting horizontal relationship, social status and inducting speech acts as variables influencing refusal strategies. Chapter 4 comparatively analyzed the aspects of refusal speech acts and refusal strategies by each variable, appearing Korean textbooks. The findings showed that although the refusal strategies preferred by Korean often appear in Korean strategies, a variety of situations and inducting speech acts are not suggested, and the relations among dialogue participants are monotonous.Chapter 5 arranges the entire results of the analysis and provided several suggestions for the construction of listening materials for the future refusal speech education. It would be necessary to a variety of situations and inducting speech acts and initially construct dialogues as situations to which learners can be actually exposed. This study identified some problems shown in Korean textbooks, by analyzing refusal speech acts appearing in the listening materials of Korean textbooks. This study has a significant implication, in that it contributes to creating listening materials, by providing several suggestions to the construction of listening materials for the future refusal speech act education.
