Brahms had left immense footprints to such a degree that it is impossible to talk about chamber music among various genres without him. Chamber songs composed by Brahms can be largely classified into songs that only use string instruments, songs that add a piano to it and songs using wind instruments. 「Clarinet Quintet b minor」 by Brahms, in particular, is the song that expressed one’s solitary emotion and resignation by using the best features of a clarinet. It is considered as the masterpiece of clarinet chamber music in terms of clarinet interpretation, its composition as chamber music and the depth of contents. This study focuses on analysis and research of 「Clarinet Quintet b minor」. The purpose of this study is to help understanding and performance of chamber musicians by looking into the life of Brahms and his chamber songs, analyzing main verses in each movement and studying formal parts for more in-depth study. This quintet song is the most original work of Brahms with sorrowful sentiment and it has Hungarian overtones. The melody of this song is composed of B Major and D Major based on overall B minor. The essence of minor is minor triad and minor 3rd, but in fact, it is the motto of the entire song. For example, 3rd descending plays an important role in the 1st theme of the 1st movement. And those are all condensed and become the theme of the 4th movement. 「Clarinet Quintet b minor」, a creation of Brahms’ 40 years of work, shows his unique composition technique for chamber music and it deals with associative techniques of each movement and conciseness much more thoroughly than his previous works. It is indispensable repertory for clarinet players among chamber songs and it is not too much to say this song is the masterpiece of Brahms as it unites sensitivity of Brahms in his vale of years and comprehension of his pieces.
