Abstract
A series of aliphatic polyether, polyester, and polycarbonate ether polyols have been synthesized using Zn-Co double metal cyanide (DMC) catalysts. The heterogeneous catalysts were prepared by reacting aqueous solutions of zinc chloride and potassium hexacyanocobaltate in the presence of various nitriles such as acetonitrile, isobutyronitrile, butyronitrile, succinonitrile, propionitrile, and trimethylacetonitrile as complexing agents (CAs). The catalysts were characterized by common analysis techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The DMC catalysts bearing nitrile CAs exhibit high performance towards ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of propylene oxide, ε-caprolactone, and copolymerization of propylene oxide and carbon dioxide. The effect of CAs and reaction conditions on the catalytic activity of DMC catalysts over (co)polymerization of the cyclic monomers were intensively studied. Kinetic studies of the polymerization of cyclic lactones were also performed to understand the mechanistic pathways. The chemical structures of the resultant polyols were characterized by FTIR and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies, the molecular weight of the (co)polymers were defined by gel permeation chromatography. The polyols prepared in this study are promising precursors for the synthesis of high performance polyurethanes.
