경제교육의 중요성 증대와 경제교육에 대한 사회적 요구에도 불구하고 우리 경제교육은 학교 중심의 입시 교육에서 크게 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 학교 경제교육에서도 현실의 필요성에 비해, 그 과목 비중이 지나치게 경시되어 왔으며 이론 중심의 교육으로 경제현상의 이해와 경제적 사고력 신장에 미치는 효과가 미미한 정도에 그친다는 비판을 받아왔다.본 연구는 이 같은 한국 경제교육의 현실을 경제교육 선진국인 미국의 경제교육에 비추어 보고, 미국의 경제교육 발전 과정과 경제교육지원시스템이 어떻게 기능하고 있는지를 분석함으로써 우리 경제교육에 주는 시사점을 찾고 향후 우리 경제교육의 발전 방향을 구체화하고자 하였다.한·미 경제교육의 현황은 학교 경제교육과 학교 밖 경제교육으로 나누어 각 영역의 경제교육의 결정요인을 중심으로 분석하였다. 그 첫 번째는 학교 경제교육의 첫 단계인 교육과정 구성으로 경제교육의 방향과 틀을 구성하는 교육과정상에서 경제교육의 비중이 어느 정도인지를 통해 경제교육의 위상을 비교하고 둘째, 교육과정을 구체화한 교과서의 구성과 실제 수업의 내용을 비교하고 셋째, 학생의 성취도에 큰 영향을 미치는 교사의 전문성을 알아보고자 교사교육체제를 비교하였다. 그리고 학교 밖에서 학교 경제교육을 어떻게 지원하고 있는지 경제교육지원체제를 비교 분석하였다. 미국의 경제교육은 국가적인 강화 노력이 계속되고 있으며 민간경제교육기구인 NCEE를 중심으로 다양한 경제 교재와 프로그램 및 학습 자료를 개발해 학교 경제교육을 효과적으로 지원하고 교사 전문성 향상을 위한 전문교육프로그램 운영과 전국적 조직망을 갖춘 경제교육센터를 통해 체계화된 교사지원체제를 구축해 학교 경제교육의 질적 성장에 기여하고 있다.전사회적인 관심 속에 학교와 학교 밖 경제교육의 긴밀한 공조가 이루어지고 경제교육 강화를 위한 노력들이 결집해 경제교육 활성화에 기여하고 있었다. 미국의 경제교육시스템은 우리 경제교육의 나아가야 할 방향을 보여준다 하겠다. 우선 학교 경제교육이 중심이 되고 있는 우리의 현실을 고려할 때, 교육과정상에서의 경제과목 비중 확대가 요구되며 개념과 이론 중심의 입시 준비 교육이 아니라 실질적인 경제교육이 이루어질 수 있도록 경제교육의 내용 구성과 자료 개발에서 힘써야 하겠다. 그리고 수업의 질을 높이기 위해 교사 전문성 향상을 위한 지속적이고 체계적인 교사교육 및 지원체제를 구축하는 것이 요구된다. 그리고 학교와의 긴밀한 연계 속에 인적·물적 자원을 결집해 이를 실현하기 위해 한국경제교육협의회에 실질적인 기능과 권한이 주어지고 법적·제도적 지원이 뒤따라야 한다. 우리 경제교육은 현재 경제교육협의회 구성과 경제교육지원법안 마련 등을 통해 새로운 출발점에 서 있다. 경제교육의 발전을 위해서는 전사회적인 관심과 지원 속에서 중장기적인 안목을 가지고 경제교육 강화를 위한 지속적인 노력이 이루어져야 할 것이다.
In spite of he social request about an enlargement of the importance of economics education, Korea economics education is not greatly escaping in an entrance examination of school-centered education. Albeit the necessity of economics education, in school economics education, the subject has been overly despised, even school economics education has been criticized because of being perceived theory-centered education, which has affected slightly on economical thinking extension and understanding of economy phenomenon.This study compares actuality of such Korean economics education with American economics education, and analyzes how American economics education development process and economics education support systems are functioning, also explores implications for Korean economics education. This study tries to concretize directions of the development of Korean economics educationThe present condition of Korean-American economics education divided into economics education of inside and outside of school was analyzed by emphases on significant factors of economics education of each area.Firstly, this study compared the status of economics education as grasping how the directions and frames of economics education affecting in economics education, and secondly, compared contents of actuality class with the composition of a text book that actualizes the education course, and thirdly compared the teacher education system to explore teachers’professionalism that has greatly influence on student's accomplishment.And this study analyzed the economy education support system, how it is supporting school economics education outside of school.American economics education is nationalistically being solidified and effectively is being continued, which is effectively supporting school economics education, according to developing various economics teaching materials and programs through the NCEE that is common people economics education organization, which is administering technical education programs for improvement of teachers’professionalism, and it is constructing the teacher support systems that are systematized through economics education centers which equip the national networks of the system and contribute in qualitative growth of school economics education.Within the social interest, economics education of the outside and inside of school has been intimately cooperating. The efforts for strengthening of economics education are being concentrated and contributed in economics education revitalization. Therefore, American economics education system shows directions for the improvement of our economics education.First, considering Korean economics education actuality that school economics education is becoming the center, the extension of economics education is required, need to endeavor to compose the contents and data development of economics education not to be a theory and an entrance examination centered education but to be practical education.And it requires constructing the continuous and systematic teacher education for teachers’professionalism and support system to improve quality of class. And concentrating human- material resources within being intimately linked with school, and realizing it to endow Korean economics education conference the practical function and power which has to follow legal and systematic supports.Korea economics education stands in a new starting point through composition of the present economy education conference and economics education support legislation.The continuous efforts for strengthening of economics education should have to be achieved in the middle or long run within the social interest to accomplish development of economics education.
