Abstract
Objectives: Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) have been identified as predictive factors for colon cancer, and the colon inflammatory index (CII), a new inflammatory index composed of NLR and LDH, was developed. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of CII for the patient with locally advanced colon cancer (LACC).Methods: From January 2011 to December 2015, A total of 412 patients who underwent radical surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy for high risk stage II or stage III colon cancer at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital were enrolled. Patients were divided into three groups depending on CII: good, intermediate and poor. Of the 412 patients, 250 were in good CII group, 131 were in intermediate CII group, and 31 were in poor CII group. Results: The 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rates were 82.2% in good CII group, 77.8% in intermediate CII group, and 54.4% in poor CII group, showing a significant difference (p =0.003). The 5-year overall survival (OS) rates were 87.3% in good CII group, 81.5% in intermediate CII group, and 75.0% in poor CII group, also showing a significant difference (p = 0.035). In multivariate analysis, intermediate CII group and poor CII group were not significant prognostic factors for OS, while poor CII group (hazard ratio 2.321; p=0.011) was significant prognostic factors for DFS.Conclusions: Based on our results, CII is a practical and inexpensive marker that can be used in predicting the prognosis of LACC.
