본 논문은 국제 사회에 잘 알려지지 않은 한국 문학을 세계적으로 알려주는 계기가 된 The Vegetarian에 나타난 독자의 가독성(Readability)을 위한 번역가의 번역 전략에 관한 연구이다. 선행 연구와 여러 인터뷰를 통해 번역가 스미스는 원문에 대한 ‘충실성’보다는 목표 독자의 ‘가독성’에 초점을 두고 있음을 알 수 있으며 텍스트 분석에서도 확인된다. 목표 문화권의 독자가 번역 작품을 읽는 것인지 원작을 읽는 것인지를 느끼는 정도를 의미하는 ‘번역가의 비가시성’과 번역문의 ‘가독성’은 영미 문화권에서 흔히 볼 수 있으며, 원천 텍스트 문화와 목표 텍스트 문화 간의 간극을 메우기 위한 번역가의 의도된 번역 전략이다. 본 연구에서는 ‘충실성’, 가독성’과 맥락을 함께 하는 번역가의 ‘가시성’과 ‘비가시성’의 번역 전략과 베누티의 ‘이국화’와 ‘자국화’ 번역 이론을 통해 The Vegetarian에서 번역가 스미스가 의도한 번역 전략과 그 양상을 논의하였다.분석 텍스트는 『채식주의자』와 번역본 The Vegetarian의 연작 중에서 세 번째 단편 「나무 불꽃」과 “Flaming Trees”로, The Vegetarian에 대한 많은 선행 연구 속에서 잘 다루어지지 않았던 “Flaming Trees”에 대하여 사회·문화적 차원에서 언어를 분석하는 체계 기능주의 언어학의 담화 모델 이론과 문장 부호를 통해 텍스트 분석을 해보고 번역가의 구체적인 번역 전략을 분석하였다. 분석의 결과, 번역가는 주체자 전환에 따른 동사의 전환과 생략을 통해 원문에서 나타나는 인물의 성격이나 상황 묘사를 단순화하여 내용을 속도감 있게 전개하고, 양태와 서법의 전환과 평가어 강도 강화의 표현을 통하여 인물의 성격과 상황을 명시화하여 묘사함으로써 목표 독자의 가독성을 높이는 번역 전략을 보여주었다. 또한 텍스트의 응집성을 위해 원문의 문체 특징 중 하나인 중심인물 초점화를 번역문에서 약화시키거나, 인물과 상황 묘사에 대한 생략을 통해 인물과 상황에 대한 설명을 단순화하면서 독자의 가독성을 높인 번역가의 번역 전략을 확인할 수 있었다.
This paper is a study on the translator's translation strategy for readers’ “Readability” in The Vegetarian, a novel, which became an opportunity to inform the world of Korean literature, which is not well known to the international community. Previous studies and several interviews show that the translator Deborah Smith focuses on the "Readability" of the target readers, rather than "Fidelity" to the source text, and it is also confirmed in this study’s text analysis. Translator's “Invisibility”, which means the degree to which readers in the target culture feel whether they are reading a translation work or the original, and “Readability” is widespread in English and American culture and it is also the intended strategy to bridge the gap between the source and target text culture. In this study, the translation strategies and aspects intended by translator in The Vegetarian were discussed through the translation strategies of "Visibility" and "Invisibility" of translators in the context of "Fidelity" and "Readability" through the translation theory of “Foreignization” and “Domestication”.The third short piece, "나무 불꽃" and "Flaming Trees", in the series of 『채식주의자』 and The Vegetarian, which were not well covered in many previous studies on The Vegetarian, were analyzed through Systematic Functional Linguistic discourse models and sentence codes. As a result of the analysis, the translator, Smith, demonstrated a translation strategy that increases the reader's “Readability” by simplifying the character's character or situation description from the source text through verb change or omission according to subject change, and describing them explicitly through the mood and modality change and adverbs insertion to enhance the intensity of expression. In addition, for the cohesion of the text, the central characterization, one of the stylistic features of the source text, was weakened in the translation to increase “Readability”.
