Abstract
This study was intended to develop a group counselling program for the alcoholics to have opportunities to look into themselves and discover the "true self". Its purpose is to identify what made them fall into alcoholic and what the obstacles to better lives are and to help them overcome such obstacles and continue with their lives for the better. The authors developed an group counselling program based on psychoanalytical object relations theory. alcoholic is perceived as a personality pathological problem arising from the initial object relation in object relations theory. In group counselling, the alcoholics are led to experience entirely new life by allowing them to recall the painful moments in their lives, accept the sentiment associated with those moments, realize that there was a better way in such circumstances, so that they can do what they have to do. These processes were repeated in the group counselling in this study together with other subjects of life such as responsibility, forgiveness, gratitudes, callings, etc. In doing so, subject-based lectures, meditation and group counselling techniques were used.Once the group counselling program was established, it was applied to two preliminary groups of total 15 subjects who were recruited from the residents of social welfare institutes. The results showed that the participants could make peace with the incidents in their lives and find the better, creative ways. They could also recognize their own life patterns and find out what were more important for their lives. We could conclude that the group counselling program developed in this study was an effective vehicle for the addicts to reach closer to their "true self". The future studies are required to promote voluntary meetings that can ensure continuation of living in reality a "true self" as found from group counselling, to identify possible problems that may arise in the course of group counselling processes and to continuously modify and improve the group counselling techniques.
