Suite Bergamasque, one of Debussy’s early piano compositions, is made of four independent movements and is the first Impressionism-in-melody suite with titles. Prelude reinforces impressionism with repetitive movements producing splendid moods. Menuet, which has polarity of classical French moods and modernism, utilizes diverse modes and scales. Clair de lune solely portrays the nature and is a titled romantic music in which moonlight is illustrated by the chord characteristics. Lastly, Passepied emphasizes on the feelings of dance music by implementing non-legato and staccato throughout the entire section.Although Suite Bergamasque was composed in Baroque suite form, it was independent of the strictness and frames found in traditional music. It was Debussy’s first attempt at his own music style in impressionism.
Claude Achille Debussy(1862-1918)는 Impressionism 시대를 대표하는 France 작곡가이다. 그는 특히 piano곡을 통해 독특한 작곡기법으로 hamony와 주법을 다양하게 사용하여 Impressionism적인 새로운 음색과 분위기를 나타낸다.본문에서 다룬 Debussy의 Suite Bergamasque(1890)는 Baroque 시대에 많이 작곡된 suite form으로 쓰여졌으나, 엄격한 틀에 구애받지 않고 자유로운 form의 Prelude, Menuet, Clair de Lune, 그리고 Passepied라는 독립된 4곡으로 구성된다. 각 곡마다 특징적인 인상적인 표현을 위해 음색뿐만 아니라 harmony, melody, rhythm 및 다른 여러 작곡 기법을 시도하여 Romanticism의 극적인 표현에서 벗어나 암시를 통하여 자연의 인상적인 느낌이나 감각적인 묘사를 보여주며, pentatonic scale과 mode, 7화음, 9화음, 11화음의 사용 그리고 섬세한 touch와 pedal point의 사용으로 Impressionism 기법이 최초로 엿보이는 Contemporary suite이다.
