Abstract
S. mutans are primary oral bacteria that cause dental caries. For the healthy and long life teeth, control of this bacteria is important. The purpose of the present study was to test the efficacy of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), photosensitizer, in elimination of S. mutans with an aid of visible light irradiation for short time. For the study, S. mutans were treated under the combinations of PpIX at 1-3 ppm and visible light at 10-30 mW/cm2. Visible light was irradiated for 3 min after treating PpIX to S. mutans. PpIX has absorption peak near 400 nm and weak peaks after 500 nm. Singlet oxygen was produced almost linearly with time by 405 nm laser in the PpIX and RNO-ID mixed solution. Specimens of the control and 660 nm laser-treated showed similarly produced singlet oxygen. S. mutans were completely eliminated by 405 nm laser for all tested conditions with 3 min irradiation. Whereas, the elimination outcomes by 660 nm laser were similar to those of the control.
