Abstract
Background: Subclinical hypothyroidism is a prevalent condition among adult population, however it is frequently overlooked. Thyroid functions affect metabolic syndrome parameters including HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, central obesity and plasma glucose. On the other hand, the relation between metabolic syndrome and subclinical hypothyroidism is not clearly identified yet. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism among metabolic syndrome patients and to identify its relation with metabolic syndrome parameters. Methods: This study involved the 3652 person (2135 male, 1517 female) above age 18, who visited a health promotion center in a general hospital from May 2007 to April 2008. The metabolic syndrome was determined by using the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) definition but, I used BMI instead of waistcircumference. Subclinical hypothyroidism was defined as an asymptomatic state characterized by normal serum concentration of free T4 and elevated serum concentration of TSH. I measured prevalence of the subclinical hypothyroidism in the metabolic syndrome group and the non-metabolic syndrome group. Results: The prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism was 2.3% in the metabolic syndrome group and 2.8% in the non-metabolic syndrome group(p>0.05).Conclusion: There was no significant correlation between subclinical hypothyroidism and metabolic syndrome.
