Abstract
본 논문은 2000년대 말, 모바일 기술의 발달과 스마트폰의 보급 등 급격한 기술의 발달이 사회학에 어떤 영향을 끼쳤는가라는 주된 연구 질문을 가지고, 지난 10년간 세계 사회학 논문에 대한 연구 동향 연구를 수행한다. 구체적으로 소셜미디어가 사회학의 연구 주제에 얼마나, 어떻게 영향을 끼쳤는지를 분석했다. 분석 대상 자료는 Web of Science에서 수집한 2009~2018년에 출간된 세계 사회학 저널 147종, 총 45,873건의 논문이다. 연구는 토픽모델링, 클러스터링, 네트워크 분석 등 '텍스트 마이닝'의 여러 기법을 활용하여 '사회학 동향 연구'의 틀로 진행되었다. 사회학 연구 주제 변화에서 주요 발견은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 가족에 대한 연구 주제는 감소 추세였다. 둘째, 사회 불안 혹은 불안정에 대한 연구 주제는 증가하고 있었다. 셋째, 소셜미디어라는 주제는 등장 후 10년만에 사회학의 주된 연구 주제 중 하나로 자리잡았다. 새롭게 등장한 여러가지 기술적 변화 중 소셜미디어가 사회학의 중요한 연구 주제가 된 까닭은 무엇인가? 이에 대한 대답으로 소셜미디어가 모바일 기술과 결합하여 편재성을 획득하면서 일상적인 사회적 활동 자체가 변화하였고, 이러한 변화의 파급력을 가장 잘 보여주는 사례로 사회운동이라는 사회 현상이 그 이전과 단절적으로 변화하였음을 설명하였다. 이러한 변화가 사회학에 주는 함의는 다음과 같다. 소셜미디어가 다양한 분야의 사회적 행위와 결합되어 사회 현상의 장소(site)로 나타나고, 이러한 활동들이 데이터화되면서 사회학자들에게는 그 이전에는 할 수 없었던 측정 및 분석의 대상이 되어가고 있다. 이는 소셜미디어가 서비스 자체의 변화, 그리고 이를 활용하는 사용자의 진화와 맞물려 지속적으로 사회학의 관심 대상이 될 것임을 예측하게 한다. 본 연구는 그간 한국 사회학 자료에 머물렀던 동향 연구의 대상을 세계 사회학으로 확장하고, 외부적 변화 중 특히 기술적 변화의 영향에 주목하여 그 영향을 계측하려 했다는 점에서 차별점이 있다. 또 소셜미디어에 대한 이론적 접근이나 사례 분석에 대한 기존 연구가 존재하지만, 소셜미디어가 사회학에 구체적으로 얼마나, 어떻게 영향을 끼쳤는지 계량적으로 분석한 것은 없다는 점에서 그 기여가 있다.
This paper analyzes the research trends of world sociology papers over the past 10 years. The main research question is how technological changes such as the development of mobile technology and the spread of smartphones have affected sociology. Specifically, I analyzed how social media influenced the research topic of sociology. The data analyzed were 45,873 articles from 147 world sociological journals published between 2009 and 2018. The research was conducted using the techniques of 'text mining' including topic modeling, clustering, and network analysis.The main findings in the changing sociological subjects are: First, research topics on families have been on the decline. Second, research topics on social crisis or inequality have been increasing. Third, the topic of social media has been newly introduced and has become one of the major research topics in sociology in just 10 years.Why has social media become an important research topic in sociology? The answer is that social media has become ubiquitous in combination with mobile technologies such as smartphones and people's daily social activities have changed. The best example of the impact of this change is the social movement. Social movements have changed significantly since the emergence of social media. The implications of this change for sociology are as follows. As social media is combined with social activities in various fields, it appears as a site of social phenomena. As these social media activities are stored, they are becoming the data to be measured and analyzed that were previously unavailable to sociologists. This, together with the development of social media services and the evolution of users, predicts that they will continue to be of interest in sociology. This study is different in that it has expanded the data of trend research that has stayed in Korean sociology data to world sociology, and in particular, the effect of technological change on sociology. In addition, although previous studies on social media have had case studies and theoretical approaches, the contributions are that there is no quantitative analysis of how much and how social media influenced sociology.
