ABSTRACTAn Analysis of the Music Style of Singer-Songwriter NAO: With a focus on the mixed genre of Wonky Funk Kim, Eun ji Dept. of New-Media Music The Graduate School Sangmyung University The ‘British Invasion' began in the 1960s, initiated by diverse artists from the United Kingdom, starting with The Beatles, who exerted their influence as artists in the conservative American music market. Subsequently, as disco music, which was the mainstream music in the United States, waned, a style of music emerged in the UK that incorporated elements of synth-pop, offering a sense of novelty to the masses. Furthermore, the advent of MTV, a 24-hour music channel, brought about a shift in the trend towards music as a visual experience, presenting the fusion of music and visuals. In the 1980s, British R&B soul musicians made their mark on the American Billboard charts, continuing the trend of the ‘British Soul Invasion.' This paper aims to explore the musical techniques of singer-songwriter NAO, who has consistently entered the Billboard charts over the past decade and led the ‘British Soul Invasion.' NAO herself has coined her music style and genre as ‘Wonky Funk.' Accordingly, this study delves into the types of Wonky Funk and the genres that constitute it. Additionally, the analysis focuses on five popular songs from NAO's debut album ‘For All We Know,' selected based on their high streaming numbers on Spotify, ranging from a minimum of 8 million to over 25 million plays. The analysis covers the formal structure, melody and harmony characteristics, rhythmic features, arrangement traits, and vocal aspects of these five songs. All five selected songs fall under the same genre of Electronic/Dance and have a medium tempo. The dominant use of synthesizer sounds, typical of EDM, distinctly demarcates the song forms. Furthermore, the 7instrumental composition is straightforward, with recurring primary melodies, rhythmic patterns, and lyrical structures. The songs employ the characteristics of the Funk genre, such as the use of one chord, a rhythm section, and stop time, to create dramatic effects. Given the nature of Wonky Funk, NAO maximizes the powerful sound and movement of synthesizers and bass while utilizing vocal effects to enhance spatiality. For vocals, she employs suitable techniques such as Marcato and Chant, which complement this style. NAO establishes her own musical identity by combining the advantages of the Wonky, Funk, and Neo-Soul genres to create the hybrid genre called ‘Wonky Funk.' This paper highlights singer-songwriter NAO, who has presented a unique musical style by utilizing the trend of genre fusion and providing innovative musical techniques. 국 문 요 약싱어송라이터 NAO의 음악적 경향 연구- 혼합 장르 Wonky Funk를 중심으로 - 상명대학교 일반대학원 뉴미디어음악학과 뉴미디어음악학전공 김은지 비틀즈로부터 시작된 영국 출신의 다양한 아티스트들이 보수적인 미국 음반시장에서 아티스트로서 영향력을 발휘하며 1960년대에 “British Invasion”이 시작되었다. 이후, 미국의 주류 음악이었던 디스코 음악이 주춤하게 되면서, 영국의 뉴웨이브 뮤지션들이 선보인 신스 팝(Synth-Pop)의 요소가 접목된 스타일의 음악은 대중들에게 새로움으로 다가왔다. 또한 24시간 음악방송 전문 채널 MTV를 통해 듣는 음악만이 아닌 보는 음악으로의 변화 흐름에 따라 음악과 비주얼의 결합을 선보였다. 1980년대 영국 R&B Soul 뮤지션들이 미국 빌보드 차트를 차지하며 “British Soul invasion”으로 이어진다. 본 논문은 최근 10년 동안 꾸준히 빌보드에 진입하며 “British Soul invasion”을 이끌어 온 아티스트인 싱어송라이터 NAO의 음악 어법을 탐구하고자 한다. NAO는 본인 스스로 자신의 음악 스타일 및 장르를 “Wonky Funk”라 명명함에 따라, 본 연구는 Wonky Funk의 유형과 Wonky Funk를 구성하는 장르를 탐구한다. 또한, 2016년 발매한 NAO의 데뷔 앨범인 의 18곡 중 Spotify 기준 음원 재생 횟수 최소 800만, 최대 2,500만 이상의 높은 기록 순으로 대중적인 5곡의 형식, 선율 및 화성적 특징, 리듬적 특징, 편곡적 특징, 보컬적 특징에 대해 분석한다. 본 논문에 선정된 5곡 모두 동일한 Electronic / Dance이며, Medium Tempo(미디엄 템포)이다. EDM의 구성 악기인 Synthesizer Sound의 주도적인 변화로 Song-form이 명확히 구분된다. 또한, 악기의 구성이 단순하고, 주선율과 리듬 패턴, 가사의 구조가 반복되며, Funk 장르의 특징인 One Chord의 사용, Rhythm Section, Stop Time을 활용해 곡의 극적 효과를 창출한다. Wonky Funk 장르의 특성상 신디사이저와 베이스의 강렬한 사운드 및 움직임과 공간감을 최대한 활용하는 보컬 이펙팅을 적용함으로 보컬의 경우, 이에 적합한 창법인 Marcato(마르카토)와 Chant(챈트) 가창 기법을 사용한다. NAO는 Wonky와 Funk, Neo-Soul 각각의 장르적 이점들을 결합하여 ‘Wonky Funk’라는 혼종 장르를 만들어 냄으로써 그녀만의 음악적 정체성을 형성한다. 시대적 추세인 “장르의 혼합”을 활용하여 독창적인 음악어법을 제시한 싱어송라이터 NAO에 관한 본 논문이 후속 연구자들에게 가치 있는 연구 자료가 되길 바란다. 주제어 : 싱어송라이터 NAO, Wonky Funk, British Invasion, 장르의 혼종
