Abstract
A flight control computer was designed for formation flight of multiple UAVs using N:N multiple communication. A big amount of flight data should be exchanged for formation flying, thereby a high performance processing unit is required. A dual-processing CPU core were adopted for this purpose. Highly reliable subsystems were designed to guarantee extension of hardware and maintenance. As a result, electronic components and connectors are minimized as they are combined with the main processors. Moreover, a low voltage and low power consumption system were designed to comply with the long-endurance mission of UAVs. A FIFO memory management and Ring-Buffer were used to reduce CPU burden and enhance reliability. A ZIGBEE communication module was attached to each processor board to enable multiple data communication to and from the other UAVs. Three individual flight computers was assumed to represent each UAV for integrated ground test. Each UAV saved flight data of the other UAVs as well as its own flight status. Post processing and analysis show that over 97% of communication reliability was guaranteed. The flight control computer designed in this research can be used for future formation flight of multiple UAVs.
