Abstract
The leaking window in Chinese Humble Administrator’s Garden is a type of Chinese traditional leakage window art in combination with natural environment and cultural histories in Suzhou region. It gives rise to various styles and landscape effects in this specific garden. Known for its abundant aesthetics meanings and cultural connotations, the leaking window art in Chinese Humble Administrator’s Garden has gradually become an important decorative element, and a visual symbol of Chinese traditional gardens. This research aims to analyze the leaking windows in Chinese Humble Administrator’s Garden from the perspectives of pattern, material and the idea of ‘Falsity or Truth’. I then utilize the pattern of leaking windows in the design of modern furniture as a critical visual element, making it as a workable styling element in modern furniture design, extending expressions and connotations. Especially with the idea of ‘Falsity or Truth’ in the patterns, the philosophical manifestation in furniture design could be enriched with greater diversity. The pieces in this research combine the unique pattern from leaking windows in Chinese Humble Administrator’s Garden with modern folk-art furniture pieces, being both decorative and practical. This provides new manifestation to modern pieces, enabling them more adaptable to different scenarios. More importantly, the research pieces show the conversion of the leaking window pattern from two-dimensional to three-dimensional. The most famous pop artist Andy Warhol makes use of objects or symbols that are known to the public, and alters them to art pieces, in order to show his affirmation and appreciation of pop culture. Similar to that, the modern folk-art furniture originates from the folk, and serves the folk-art with both their aesthetic and practical needs. Hence, modern folk-art furniture depicts both local customs and civil life. This research also aims to study the modern folk-art furniture in terms of variety, material, techniques and decorative elements, and applies them in the research pieces. Modern furniture always has the idea of life is the source of art, and art goes back to life. It comes from the public, produced by the public and aims to serve daily life usages. With the same idea, this research recycles existing fork furniture pieces and extend their life span with new meanings.
