This research aimed at investigating Jinul(知訥, 1158~1210)'s Seon(禪)-Gyo(敎) Congruence Theory, who established ideological characteristic of Korean Buddhism by founding the system of 'Hwaeomseon(華嚴禪)' that Hwaeom(華嚴) and Seon(禪) coincided. For a start, after investigating necessity of Seon-Gyo congruence theory through the Seon-Gyo’s conflict situation of Buddhism during Jinul's period, this research analyzed how the logic of Seon-Gyo congruence theory appeared in his concrete writing, and derived the characteristic and significance. There are more than 650 research results related to Jinul in domestic and overseas, 13 papers among them are the representative papers related to Seon-Gyo congruence theory. Considering Jinul's whole life was related to reformation of Goryeo(高麗) Buddhism, and fundamental cure of conflict and discord between Seonjong(禪宗) and Gyojong(敎宗), this research status is very insufficient. Consequently necessity of this research was requested. To investigate concrete content of this research, this research investigated Jinul's life and trend of Buddhism during the Military subject reign in chapter 2 'Jinul's life and historical backdrop'. Also, the period when Jinul lived belonged to the 3rd period when the leading power was changed from highborn noble family to military power, if we divided Goryeo Buddhist history into 4 periods. This research determined that his Seon-Gyo congruence theoryhad great significance in the way that it combined the idea of Hwaeom and Seon , which were highly regarded throughout the whole Goryeo Buddhist history. In chapter 3, ‘Conflict in Buddhism and necessity of Seon-Gyo congruence theory during Jinul's period’, this research analyzed cause of conflict between Seonjong and Gyojong, and investigated Hwaeom school monks' awareness on Seon(禪). Also investigated necessity of ‘theory and practice’ about Seon-Gyo congruence theory from the position of Jinul, a monk of Seonjong. In chapter 4, ‘Content of Seon-Gyo congruence theory suggested by Jinul’, this research investigated how Seon-Gyo congruence theory methodology of Jongmil(宗密, 780~841) was accepted, also discussed the connection between Donojeomsu(頓悟漸修) and Seon-Gyo congruence theory. Addedly this research concretely analyzed the content of Seon-Gyo congruence theory that appeared in his writing, 『Beobjibbyeolhaengrokjeolyobyeongyibsagi(法集別行錄節要幷入私記)』and 『Wondonseongbulron(圓頓成佛論)』. Here, in chapter 5, ‘Characteristic and significance of Jinul's Seon-Gyo congruence theory’, this research investigated the characteristic, influence and modern significance of Seon-Gyo congruence theory through this research.
