Abstract
This study aimed to identify the effect of harm avoidance on social anxiety tendency in university students and to examine the mediation effects of repetitive negative thinking and decentering. A total of 186 university students (37 male, 149 female) completed self-report questionnaires, including the Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised Short Version (TCI-RS), Korean Version of Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire (K-PTQ), Experience Questionnaire (EQ), Social Phobia Scale (SPS), and Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS). For collected data, correlations among variables have been verified by using SPSS 25.0 and Process Macro along with double mediation effect. At the same time, bootstrapping was conducted to validate the significance of indirect effect. The results were as follows. First, significant positive correlations were found in harm avoidance, repetitive negative thinking, decentering, performance anxiety, and social interaction anxiety. Second, the relationship between harm avoidance and performance anxiety was double-mediated by repetitive negative thinking and decentering. However, decentering had a dysfunctional effect on performance anxiety. This suggests dual effect of decentering given the social situation when considering social anxiety. Third, the relationship between harm avoidance and social interaction anxiety was not double-mediated by repetitive negative thinking and decentering. It can be seen that harm avoidance temperament has a very strong influence on social interaction anxiety, suggesting that the expression of performance anxiety and social interaction anxiety, which are sub-dimensions of social anxiety, is qualitatively different. In addition, as harm avoidance has a great influence on social interaction anxiety, it must be considered for intervention in social interaction anxiety. Finally, as a therapeutic factor, decentering needs to be substantiated in the context of superordinate concept of mindfulness, for a more integrated approach, rather than as subordinate concept.
