Abstract
Due to the advancement of technology and changes in lifestyle, our lifebecomes more convenient and life expectancy is also increasing and growingrapidly. However, mortality is increasing due to aging, and cancer is the numberone cause of death. In recent years, in the fields of tissue engineering andmedical devices, materials with biocompatibility are in the spotlight, and therevenue and development of the global market for biocompatible materialsdevelopment continues to grow.A long-standing problem with biomedical optics is the turbidity of biologicaltissues. Due to the high scattering and absorption loss, light cannot beeffectively transmitted and collected to target sites in deep tissue. The mosteffective way to solve this problem is to implant optical fibers directly into thebody. However, conventional optical fibers have limitations as implants forimplantation into the body such as glass and plastic.A biodegradable optical fiber with biocompatibility that can be implanted intothe body has been manufactured by improving the disadvantages of the existingoptical fiber. Materials with high transparency are required to make opticalfibers, and the core must have a higher refractive index than the cladding. Soft, biodegradable optical fibers were fabricated using GelMA and Soldium alginate asbiocompatible materials. Therefore, this paper is expected to contribute a lot ofdevelopment to the medical field as a device used for patient-tailored medicaltreatment and in vivo diagnosis and treatment using biodegradable optical fiberwith biocompatibility by improving the disadvantages of the existing optical fiber.
