Abstract
This paper presents the need to accurately and precisely locate construction materials on site, and investigates the applicability of the currently employed location and positioning systems to this objective, including total stations, GPS, Real Time Measurement System. The emerging radio frequency identification (RFID) technology alternative to the current systems is then described for tracking objects in an indoor environment, and its applicability to construction material location tracking is examined, while a possible solution approach to its limitations is discussed. This paper concludes that in order to make RFID technology a reality for application to on site material tracking, more cost-effectively scalable RFID systems are required that have the capability to form ad hoc networks of RFID tags without drawing on densely deployed grids of RFID readers.
