Abstract
Rowe and Kahn’s model of successful aging is criticized about implicit Western cultural biases creating difficulties to apply within a cross cultural perspective. Since this model was developed in the U.S., this study attempts to apply this model in South Korea. This study examines not only the emotional and social preparation but also how the inclusion of financial preparation for old age affects successful aging of Korean baby boomers using individual data from the Korean Retirement and Income Studies. Hierarchical multiple regressions were used to test factors affecting successful aging. For Korean baby boomers, preparation for the aging period, which Rowe and Kahn do not consider as factors of successful aging were found to be important aspects affecting successful aging. This cross-cultural perspective expands the model with strong practice and policy implications for successful aging.
