Abstract
This study aims to give an in-depth understanding of why and how on instituting an intensive English camp, to show the reality of the camp and finally to provide suggestions for an effective college English through investigating the participants and instructors’ perception of the English camp program. The Camps for this study have been executed four times for over the course of two years, from 2010 to 2012 during summer and winter vacations. For this study, reflection papers from students and an instructor’s journal were collected and analyzed. The collective total of student participants has been 320 in which the demographic characteristics have been a variety of majors and ages. The students’ reflection papers conducted at the end of each camp were open-ended, and the instructor’s journal was written on a daily basis through the camp. The journal includes reflections based on the instructors’ teaching experience throughout the camp, interviews with other participating instructors and students. The participants’ perceptions of the camp were categorized into five factors: affective aspects, cultural aspects, language ability, teaching methods, and camp management. Considering these factors, the suggestions for an effective college English camp were provided, presenting merits and demerits of the overall management of the program.
