웹툰은 디지털만화 중에서 새로운 기능과 형태로 국내에서 만들어져 지속적으로 성장해 온 콘텐츠 산업 중 하나이다. 현재 웹툰은 다양한 구성과 흥미로운 스토리텔링으로 국내 독자들 뿐만 아니라 해외 시장에서도 큰 관심을 끌고 있다. 본 논문은 한국 웹툰의 해외 시장 진출을 위해 각 권역 별 시장들의현황을 알아보고 그 시장에 진출하기 위해 직면한 주요 문제들을 분석하는데초점을 맞춰보려 한다. 해외 만화 시장은 인쇄만화의 규모에 비해 디지털만화의 규모가 미미한수준이지만 여타 콘텐츠와 마찬가지로 점차 디지털화가 가속될 것이라고 전망되고 있다. 시장의 규모 측면에서 바라볼 때에도 전 세계 만화 시장은 점진적으로 발전의 여지가 남아 있는 상황으로 예측되고 있으며, 앞에서 말한 디지털화가 가속될수록 웹툰이 포함된 디지털만화 산업은 더욱 큰 규모로 성장하리라 기대된다. 이번에 조사한 권역의 국가들이 한국 문화에 대한 관심이우리의 웹툰에 대한 관심으로 이어지고 있고 국내 기업들은 이러한 기회를 발판으로 해외시장 진출에 적극적으로 노력하고 있지만, 다른 콘텐츠의 진출과는 다르게 경제적 성과는 아직 크게 이루어 내지 못하고 있다. 그 이유는 해외시장 진출 과정에서 한국 웹툰 산업이 직면한 문제들이 존재하기 때문이다. 첫째로, 한국 웹툰 산업의 내실과 그 근본적인 문제로 콘텐츠 생산량에 한계를 가지고 있는 것이다. 한국 웹툰 기업들의 경우 해외에서다수의 웹툰을 수입하고 있으며, 수입 국가를 찾아보면 중국과 동남아시아 시장의 비율이 상당히 높다는 것을 알 수 있다. 이를 분석해 본 결과 콘텐츠 웹툰화에 있어 국내 작업량의 한계를 확인할 수 있었다. 둘째는 현재 전 세계 시장에서 공식적인 웹툰 제공업체 외에 불법으로 콘텐츠를 제공하는 곳이 다수존재하여 정상적인 산업 생태계를 어지럽히고 있는 경우가 늘어나 웹툰 기업과 작가들의 수익과 권리를 보호하는 것이 어렵다는 문제가 발생하고 있다. 이 논문에서는 권역별 웹툰 산업의 현황을 찾아 앞으로 더욱 성장할 수 있는지에 대한 확인을 해 보는 한편 이러한 문제들을 공유하여 향후 다양한 문제해결에 대한 연구가 다양한 방향으로 이루어지길 바란다.
Webtoons are a rapidly growing content industry in Korea, distinguished by their innovative features and formats as digital comics. They have attracted significant interest not only from domestic readers but also from international markets, captivating audiences worldwide with their diverse storytelling. This paper focuses on analyzing the current status of the overseas webtoon market across different regions and the key challenges faced by the Korean webtoon industry in its pursuit of global expansion. Upon examining the overseas comic markets by region, it is evident that both print comics and digital comics coexist. However, compared to the scale of print comics, the digital comic market in all regions remains relatively modest. Like many other forms of content transitioning to digital platforms, it is predicted that the share of digital comics, including webtoons, will gradually increase. The global comic market, in terms of size, is projected to have ongoing potential for development, and as digitalization accelerates, the digital comic industry, incorporating webtoons, is expected to grow even further. The countries surveyed in this study demonstrate a growing interest in Korean culture, which has translated into substantial interest in Korean webtoons. Domestic companies are actively endeavoring to capitalize on these opportunities to penetrate international markets. Nevertheless, the economic achievements of such efforts are yet to be substantial. This is partly due to the challenges encountered during the process of venturing into overseas markets. Firstly, the Korean webtoon industry faces limitations in content production. Korean webtoon companies heavily rely on importing numerous webtoons from overseas, with a significant portion coming from China and Southeast Asia. This analysis reveals the constraints in domestic production capacity for webtoon content. Secondly, the existence of illegal platforms offering unauthorized content disrupts the legitimate industrial ecosystem globally, hindering the protection of webtoon companies’ and creators’ revenues and rights. For the Korean webtoon industry to achieve greater success in the global market, fundamental efforts are required. Providing content that resonates with each cultural region and investing in professional translation beyond mere literal translation to ensure local empathy are essential steps. Additionally, consistent research is needed on technical aspects to safeguard the rights and revenues of copyright owners. This paper aims to explore the current state of webtoon industries in different regions and verify their potential for further growth. Simultaneously, by sharing these challenges, it hopes to encourage diverse research directions for addressing these issues in the future.
