Abstract
Purpose: This study uses an observation method to clarify the differences between Yogo teachers' responses to students visiting the school health room of Japanese elementary and junior high schools. Subjects: One hundred seven students visiting health rooms of 8 elementary and junior high schools in A prefecture. Method: Observation by three researchers were conducted for four hours between 10 a.m and 2 p.m. on a particular day in each school. Results and discussion: In elementary schools, Yogo teacher's responsiveness to the students was about 12 minutes on average. When a student came into the school health room for medical reasons, the Yogo teacher quickly addressed first-aid issues and positioned herself so as to be physically at the student's level either by leaning down casually or acquiring a bent-knee squatting position. In junior high school, the Yogo teacher's responsiveness to the students took 22 minutes on average. When the students came into the health room for medical or health consultation Yogo teachers responded to their physical or psychological needs by standing diagonally either to the right or left of the student, or in front of the student. The number of responses, the response place, the distance between Yogo teacher and student, the frequency of touching, and types of touch did not differ between elementaryand junior high school Yogo teachers. This research project's observation method illuminates points previously unable to ascertain utilizing questionnaire method alone.
