Abstract
The clinical efficacy of ME 1207, a new oral cephem agent, for the treatment of suppurative otitis media was investigated. ME 1207 was, as a rule, administered orally at a dose of 100 or 200mg t. i. d. after meals for 3 to 14 days. The patients analyzed for clinical efficacy were 81 out of 87 patients treated with ME 1207. They included 31 patients with acute suppurative otitis media, 2 with chronic suppurative otitis media, and 48 with acute exacerbation of chronic suppurative otitis media. The clinical efficacy assessed by the doctors in charge was excellent in 28 caces, good in 30, fair in 12 and poor in 11, with an efficacy rate of 72%. The clinical efficacy of ME 1207 assessed by the Efficacy Assessment Committee was excellent in 31, good in 22, fair in 19 and poor in 9, with an efficacy rate of 65%. The bacteriological eradication rate for monomicrobial infections was 76% against gram-positive organisms and 60% against gram-negative organisms. For polymicrobial infections it was 76%. The overall eradication rate was 74%. Clinical adverse reactions occurred in 4 (5%) of the 87 patients: diarrhea in 2, abdominal pain in one and urticaria in one. Five (10%) of 51 patients examined showed abnormal laboratory findings. We thus concluded that ME 1207 is useful for the treatment of suppurative otitis media.
