Abstract
On the construction of Sapporo bypass, quicklime pile method for development of weak soil foundation was adopted.Improvement of the weak soil foundation of Sapporo bypass results have been shown as follows : 1. Relationship between dry density of quicklime pile and diameter of hydrated lime pile can be given by the following experimental formula : γc=1/2·d'2/d2 (1-n') ·Gc·γwwhere γc is dry density of quicklime pile, d' is diameter of hydrated lime pile, d is diameter of quicklime pile, n' is porosity of hydrated lime pile, Gc is specific gravity of quicklime and γw is density of water.2. Relationship between moisture content and dry density of hydrated lime pile can be given by the following experimental formula : γt-c/γd-c-1=w/100where γt-c is wet density of hydrated lime pile, γd-c is dry density of hydrated lime pile and w is moisture content of hydrated lime pile.3. Relationship between moisture content and CBR of hydrated lime pile can be given by the following experimental formula : CBR=-0.264w+22.274. The hydrated products of quicklime generally are hydrated lime of colloidal crystals. In the case of hydrated of quicklime into weak soil foundation with high moisture content, the hydrated products are hydrated lime of macro-crystals and expansive hardened bodies which have large tensile strength.5. Weak soil foundation can be reduced settlement by means of expansion of quicklime cast in the soil as a group of piles.6. Moisture content of the soil is theoretically decreased by addition of quicklime which absorbs water by chemical absorption, capillary absorption and evaporation caused by heat generation.7. The soil improved with quicklime piles has five times as much cohesion as the weak soil foundation.
