Abstract
Nowadays, car navigation systems for automobiles are widely used and have gained considerable popularity. Though, the use of a navigation system for motorcycle is not as popular compared to the automobiles. This is due to issues that current motorcycle navigation systems have, not being efficient to provide navigation information to the motorcycle riders. It is known that motorcycle riders have characterful gaze movement, which is important to discuss this to design an efficient navigation system. Concerning the fact, we have been proposing the use of head-up display technology for motorcycle. Previous researches have focused primarily on how the motorcycle riders process the displayed information, and have not discussed about the timing to present information. Thus, in this paper, we describe about designing the timing to provide navigation information, furthermore, providing route information especially for navigating in the urban street area. We conducted an experiment using an immersive CAVE motorcycle simulator, measuring the rider’s gaze point movement and asking their opinion whether the provided timing is fast or slow in the scale of one to five. From the experimental results, we conclude that providing route information around 55 meters before the crossroad is the possibly efficient timing if the motorcyclist is riding in the urban street area.
