Abstract
In this study, we present a waterflow sensor system for monitoring sea currents in marine fish aquaculture. Low-oxygen water influx substantially threatens marine aquaculture, possibly inducing mass fish death. Conventional sensor systems can detect low-oxygen water influx via dissolved oxygen and current sea monitoring. However, their suitability for aquaculture monitoring needs to be improved by their unwieldy size, high cost, and high-power consumption. Here, we propose a remote waterflow sensor system. The system detects sea currents by directly measuring water velocity via a pressure sensor type waterflow sensor. Utilizing solar power, power-saving operation, and the low-power consumption waterflow sensor, we can measure over an extended period, even in energy-constrained sea. The fabricated system was installed in a fish tank at Uchiura Bay. It operated steadily for over three months during winter with limited sunlight. These results show the potential applicability of the proposed system as a monitoring system for ocean currents.
