Abstract
Background. Tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica (TO) is a relatively rare disease characterized by the presence of multiple osseous and cartilaginous submucosal nodules in the lumen of the trachea and bronchi. Case. A 56-year-old female presented to a clinic with a persistent cough and hemoptysis. Chest computed tomography revealed multiple nodules with calcification in the lumen of the trachea and bronchi, and she was referred to our hospital. Bronchoscopy demonstrated mucosal swelling with redness and multiple yellowish-white nodules protruding into the lumen of the trachea and main bronchi. A bronchoscopic biopsy was not performed because the nodules were friable and prone to bleeding. Instead, a surgical tracheal biopsy was performed, the histopathological findings of which confirmed a diagnosis of TO. There were multiple nodules of bone and cartilage in the submucosa of the trachea. Conclusions. We herein report a case of TO that was successfully diagnosed by means of a surgical tracheal biopsy.
