Abstract
Close attention has been paid to the relationship between locomotive syndrome and falling down. Visual information has been shown to be important in processing information needed for postural control. With these borne in mind, we evaluated the influence of differences in indoor illuminance associated with visual sensation on the index of postural stability (IPS). The study revealed significant differences in the IPS between 0 lux and 30 lux and between 0 lux and 100 lux (generally recommended illuminance). Reduction in the volume of visual information is considered to impair the balancing capability, suggesting the importance of taking adequate care to avoid environments with inadequate luminance levels.
