Abstract
We have encountered a rare case of breast cancer and asymptomatic phechromocytoma associated with von Recklinghausen's disease. A 46-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of a left breast lump. She had cafe au lait maculae and multiple neurofibromas since her youth. Physical examination revealed a tumor, measuring 4.0×4.0cm, in the upper half of the left breast. Aspiration cytology offered a diagnosis of breast cancer (Stage II). The operation (Bt+Ax) was done. Histopathological examination revealed papillotubular carcinoma with lymph node metastasis (n1α) and the skin tumor was neurofibroma. ER and PgR were positive. After the operation, abdominal CT revealed a solitary mass in the right adrenal gland. Laboratory data showed that serum catecholamine levels were normal and urine catecholamine levels were elevated.131I-MIBG scintigraphy showed positive imaging that corresponded with the right adrenal tumor. She has not shown symptoms of hypertension. With a suggested diagnosis of asymptomatic pheochromocytoma, she underwent right adrenectomy, and histopathological examination confirmed pheochromocytoma. She remains disease free 7 months after the operation.
