Abstract
Superior sulcus lung tumor patients have recently shown favorable therapeutic outcomes. However, reports on secondary lung cancer in such patients and its surgical treatment are very rare. We have operated on 17 patients with superior sulcus tumors, including 3 patients undergoing vertebral resection. Diagnoses of secondary lung cancers were made in 3 patients, 2 men and 1 woman, after about 10 years post-operatively. The cancer was ipsilateral in 1 patient and contralateral in 2 patients. In order to reduce operative invasion, the 2 contralateral patients received video-assisted thoracic surgery. The ipsilateral patient underwent left completion pneumonectomy. Histologically, all 3 were diagnosed with 2nd primary lung cancer. Very careful surveillance should be performed for patients following surgical treatment for advanced lung cancer. Detecting early-stage metachronous cancer will make it possible to select a safe operative method, which will improve the patient's prognosis.
