Abstract
We report a case (68-year-old man) of early squamous cell carcinoma of the hilus treated curatively by endoscopic therapy. The patient was referred to our division because of abnormal fibrous changes in 1986. Bronchoscopic examinations on admission revealed a small protruding tumor at the bifurcation between the right B^1 and B^3 bronchi. Based on pathological findings of biopsy specimens of the tumor and other clinical data, an early squamous cell carcinoma of the lung was disgnosed. Non-surgical therapies, including partial resection by the biopsy forceps and local injection of peplomycin in the tumor were performed because of the patient's decreased pulmonary function. These therapies produced complete remission for more than 42 months, and the patient is still apparently disease-free. With the increase in the proportion of elderly people, elderly cases of early squamous cell carcinoma of the hilus unable to receive surgical therapy because of various reasons associated with aging, has recently been increasing. This case suggests that this type of conservative therapy will be useful for the treatment of such elderly cases of early squamous cell carcinoma of the lung.
