Abstract
The authors quantitatively estimate the effects of the changes of the deck arrangements of fishing gears and structures of fishing boats on the crew's traffic lines using a virtual space simulation technique. Three small trawling boats with different deck arrangements (center bridge, fore-side bridge and bridgeless) are built in the virtual production simulator software implementing the A^* algorithm as a path finding technique. The simulated work is following; a crew takes three baskets (each including five fish) from the quarterdeck to the fish holds one by one, stores the fish into the fish holds, and return empty baskets to the original positions. Work times and traffic line lengths are estimated in the three arrangements. The work times in the fore-side bridge and the bridgeless arrangement are shortened 24% and 39% respectively in comparison with that of the center bridge arrangement. The virtual space simulation technique will increase the efficiency in improving deck arrangements and decrease fishermen's risks.
