Abstract
Metastatic carcinoma of the larynx is very rare. Herein, we report a rare case of malignant melanoma with metastasis to the larynx. A 76-year-old male underwent surgical removal of a malignant melanoma on his ring finger. Subsequently, he presented with recurrent malignant melanoma, with metastatic spread to the lung and brain, and received chemotherapy, surgery, and gamma knife therapy for the recurrent progressive cancer at our dermatology department. He developed hoarseness of the voice. Fiberoptic laryngoscopic examination revealed a submucosal tumor between the left glottic and subglottic spaces. We performed laryngomicrosurgery for obtaining a biopsy, and confirmed the tumor as a laryngeal metastasis from malignant melanoma, and treated the patient with local injections of interferon-β. The treatment successfully controlled the progression of the laryngeal tumor, however, the malignant melanoma metastasized to the small bowel, which led to invagination, and necessitated discontinuation of the local injection therapy into the larynx. Due to tumor enlargement, a tracheostomy was performed at the same time as repositioning of the invagination and segmental resection of the jejunum with the metastatic tumor.
