Abstract
To ensure education of the highest quality, the Matsumoto Dental University has conducted surveys annually since 2007 to gather studentsʼ opinions on the lectures and exercise contents, and used the feedback to improve student instruction. This report outlines the content of seven years of periodontology mock exercises offered to fourth-year students, and delineates the results of analysis of a questionnaire survey carried out for understanding the conditions of the mock exercises as well as for re-envisioning and improving their content. The questionnaire comprised 13 items developed independently by the department of periodontology, and the students were asked to evaluate each item on a five-point scale. Students who selected one of the higher two points on the scale were classified as a group satisfied with the exercise content, while those who selected one of the two lower points were designated as “dissatisfied.” The survey also evaluated the correlation between the satisfaction level with the exercises and the number of students in the class; statistical analysis was carried out using Pearsonʼs correlation coefficient. The correlation between student non-satisfaction and the number of students was most significant (correlation coefficient of 0.915) for the “Placement of Your Seat” item. Furthermore, significant correlation was also found for the items of “Exercise Notebook”, and “the Video Demonstration”. No significant correlation was observed for “Placement of the Demonstration Desk”, “Model”, or “OSCE Training”, although a tendency towards a dissatisfied score increased as the number of students increased. This suggests that the number of students influences the items of the environment and the content of the exercises. Regular evaluation of the appropriateness of the instructional methodology and extraction of problems for observation and improvement are important. Student questionnaire surveys represent an important aspect of that effort. Nihon Shishubyo Gakkai Kaishi (J Jpn Soc Periodontol) 56(3):330-341, 2014.
