After the action plan on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), we analyzed the contents of newspaper articles on AMR and clarified the current state of information dissemination regarding AMR. On the basis of our analysis, we created the following 11 categories: nature of resistant bacteria, occurrence and increase of resistant bacteria owing to inappropriate use of antibiotics, mechanism of resistance, spread of resistant bacteria, harm of medical treatment due to resistant bacteria, initiatives for the proper use of antibiotics, raising public awareness regarding antibiotics, the need for behavioral and attitude changes throughout society, AMR policies in Japan, AMR policies around the world, and environmental contamination because of the use of antibiotics. Information sources and statistical data were clearly shown in AMR-related newspaper articles, and information based on the AMR countermeasure action plan was comprehensively covered. In the future it is necessary for the media to cooperate with specialized institutions, medical professionals, and researchers—who are the sources of information—to continue appropriate information dissemination.
