Abstract
A 68-year-old man was diagnosed as having an extra-gastric pedunculated submucosal tumor of the stomach when he received examination before surgery for early cancer of the transverse colon. Therefore, a partial transverse colectomy and a partial gastrectomy were performed simultaneously. The tissue specimen of the gastric submucosal tumor showed continuity between the tumor and serosa of the stomach, and revealed a pedunculated well-defined fist-sized tumor. On histopathological examination, HE staining revealed continuity between the tumor and intrinsic muscular coating of the stomach, and acord-like arrangement of the spindle cells, in part, with nuclei. In immunostaining, Desmin and s-100β were negative, Actin was equivocal, and Vimentin was positive. CD34 and CD117 that are acqwring increasing interest as marker of GIST were positive. Thus, this tumor was identified as gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) that had no apparent tissue origin. The concept of GIST has not been established as yet, and so we report this case together with some bibliogrophical comments.
