Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to reexamine the relationship between ethos and professionalism as it has been reevaluated in recent years. Each profession has a peculiar ethos that motivates hard work. However, the function of ethos is not only to motivate but also to control its internal culture. These present conditions have not been sufficiently examined. The subject of this paper is “profession architects” who design buildings. What kind of ethos is required by a “professional architect”? And how is it made the inside by an individual? This paper focuses on university-based professional training as the place that cultivated the ethos, and examines educational practices. At the site where education is carried out, academic work is described with abstract vocabulary such as “quality of the space” and “the beauty” that a student can achieve “only in the technique that is not standardized” than a technique necessary to receive a high evaluation. However, “the technique that is not standardized” does not have a clear definition, and there is no clear curriculum for learning them. On the other hand, for a given subject, sincere diligence is evaluated. The university functions as a place of the cultural socialization to let a student create a desirable ethos from within. The ethos that a student created internally does not only have power to let personal work drive voluntarily. In building professionals, the significance of existence is doubted in various meanings. It was revealed that it functioned for the long-term, stable continuation of “the professional architect”.
