Abstract
We report a case of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) located in the cardia of the stomach that was treated with a partial resection and Toupet fundoplication. A 60-year-old man had a 3 cm submucosal tumor (SMT) located in the anterior wall of the cardia of the stomach that was suggestive of GIST. A partial resection of the stomach was performed, so as to remove all of the SMT without incising the esophagus ; stomach was closed by suturing. To prevent gastroesophageal reflux occurring due to the destruction of the angle of His, fundoplication using the Toupet method was done. On pathology GIST was diagnosed. The patient's postoperative course was uneventful. The patient has been asymptomatic for 12 months post surgery ; no recurrence, metastasis, or reflux esophagitis has occurred. It would appear that this surgical approach is effective for GIST located in the cardia of the stomach.
