Abstract
In Case 1, a hepatitis-B-antigen-positive 57-year-old man underwent a low anterior resection for rectal cancer. Later, occupied lesions in the liver were detected and hepatic partial resection were performed five times, at 9 23, 67, 75, and 83 months after the primary rectal operation. The specimen of the liver at 75 months was diagnosed for hepatocellular carcinoma and specimens from the 4 other times were diagnosed for metastatic rectal cancer. At 93 months from the first operation, the patient died of the rectal cancer with its systemic metastases. Case 2 was a woman on whom a sigmoidectomy for sigmoid cancer was performed at 57 years of age. Fifty-six months after this operation, she underwent partial resection of the liver for metastatic colonic cancer. At 107 months after the first operation, a second hepatic resection was done for hepatocellular carcinoma. At 10 months from the last operation, the patients died of hepatocellular carcinoma with its systemic metastases. These cases of coexisting with liver metastases from colorectal cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma are rare, as only 9 cases hae been reported in Japan during this decade.
