Abstract
THz time-domain spectroscopy was used to measure the optical constants of a pure liquid crystal (LC), 4'-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), and its LC colloids with SiO2 particles in the frequency range of 0.2-2.0 THz. We found that the LC colloids provide us with very stable and reproducible spectra, while big uncertainty of spectra in time was observed for the pure 5CB. Effective medium theory allowed us to deduce the optical constants for the pure 5CB from the spectra of the LC colloids. With increasing frequency, the refractive index of 5CB decreased with the absorption coefficient being very small.
