Abstract
We investigated the characteristics and treatment effects of 110 burning mouth syndrome (BMS) patients who visited our department from 2013 to 2017 retrospectively. We examined age, male-female ratio, consultation route, duration of symptom, and treatment effect. Average age of the patients was 66 years and women accounted for 88%. The rate of patient referral was 76%, with the highest number of referrals from dental practitioners. The median duration of symptom was 12 months (4-360 months). The mean duration of treatment was 13 months (median 4.5 months, range 1 month to 77 months). Pharmacotherapy was the main treatment, and there were many cases of using Japanese kampo medicines. In cases where treatment was difficult, various drugs such as anxiolytics were used. The treatment strategy was effective in 55% of the patients.
