Abstract
The roots of Stellera chamaejasme L. (Thymelaeaceae) are known as lang-du in Chinese traditional medicine. We have examined the constituents of lang-du and performed fractionation of the methanol extract by testing for piscicidal activity on killifish. From the fraction exhibiting the activity, we have isolated four known diterpenes (1, 2, 3, 4) and two known lignans (5, 6). Furthermore, from the fraction exhibiting no activity we have isolated one known lignan (7) and eight novel C-3/C-3"-biflavanones (8, 9, 10, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20). The structures of these compounds have been established on the basis of spectral and chemical evidence.
